Just think of the internet speed shooting as fast as the speed of light. Looks futuristic or weird, right? But no, this is almost a credible reality with the new Li-Fi technology. This breakthrough networking technology offers at least 100 times faster speed compared to the existing Wi-Fi. Until now the system has been tested in various industrial settings and the outcomes proved to be awesome. So, this is going to be our hope in expecting lightning fast internet.

Introducing Li-Fi

Li-Fi basically refers to a wireless networking technology capable of transmitting high-speed data utilizing visible light communication or VLC. The latest research by the scientists on this technology could be fruitful to offer as fast as 224 gigabits per second speed. Undoubtedly, this can readily change the face of internet in the globe. The technology developed and tested in Tallinn, Estonia has been confirmed to offer a whopping 1 GB per second speed.

As for the background of the technology, we must talk about the contribution of a Scottish scientist named Harald Haas belonging to the University of Edinburgh. He is now widely credited to have developed Li-Fi back in 2011. For the first time, he showed that through the flickering light emanation from a single LED light huge volumes of data can be transmitted than normally done by a cellular tower.

VLC is the core technology powering Li-Fi. VLC by using visible light between 400 to 800 terahertz flickering constantly can transmit huge volumes of binary data, though the flickering remains imperceptible to the naked eye. Moreover, Li-Fi is much more reliable and secure, since light cannot be transmitted through the walls allowing lesser chances of interference among networked devices. If the technology really sees the daylight and becomes available, the internet can easily be accessed through LED light bulbs in homes or workplaces.

Comparison of Li-Fi and Wi-Fi

Comparison of Li-Fi and Wi-Fi

The speed of internet has continued to increase and became more consistency, right? Well, while networking technology will continue to evolve and improve, Li-Fi can be described as a leap from what the present state of Wi-Fi.

A lightning speed is too much to expect when we consider the state of networking as of now. But a promise of 1GB data transmission looks mindblowing enough to make us look at Wi-Fi as a primitive solution. So, actually there is no ground of comparison but still, let us try to offer some blunt facts.

  • Li-Fi is more stable, reliable and efficient compared to Wi-Fi.
  • The LED light technology makes Li-Fi more energy efficient and easily available like regular LED lights.
  • Li-Fi is more consistent in ensuring high-speed data transmission

When is it going to be available?

Li-Fi has been revealed and the breakthrough technology is only going through a testing phase. Naturally, mass production and market availability are still not close in hand. We can say with assurance that Wi-Fi is going to stay as the commonest networking technology is not going to lose its ground anytime soon. On the other hand, with the seemingly mind-blowing promise of speed and consistency of Li-Fi it can be adopted by big tech players anytime and can actively change the face of networking on the earth.
